    Dr. Alan K. Chang is a foreign teacher who joined the College of Life and Environmental Sciences at Wenzhou University in 2016 as a full-time teaching staff and a specially appointed professor. Dr. Chang is from Australia, and he obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Queensland. After graduation, he continued to work as a full-time researcher in Australia. He later went to South Korea, America, and other cities in China where he continued to pursue his research and began teaching before coming to work at Wenzhou University. His previous research focused on the structural and functional studies of recombinant proteins from plants and bacteria. He has also collaborated with colleagues in other fields, including fermentation, the molecular mechanisms of cancer, and the biological effects of natural products with medicinal values. His research and collaboration with colleagues have led to the publication of numerous papers across different disciplines.

    Here at Wenzhou University, Dr. Chang teaches zoology, biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology to international undergraduate students majoring in biotechnology, and scientific writing to both international undergraduate and local graduate students, as well as oral English and other forms of English writing to undergraduate and graduate students from different majors.

    Besides teaching, Dr. Chang also works with Professor Yin Xueping in her research on the effects of cadmium on marine bivalves and the underlying mechanisms associated with cadmium-induced toxicity. So far, this research has led to the publication of several papers. His collaboration with former colleagues outside Wenzhou University has also led to a number of publications in recent years. Another important task in Dr. Chang’s work at Wenzhou University is to actively edit scientific papers written in English by teachers and graduate students within the college for publication in international scientific journals. Over the years, many of the papers that he has edited have been successfully published in different journals. Dr. Chang has extensive knowledge and first-hand experience in scientific writing through many years of editing work in this field. He believes that scientific writing and communication are a vital part of the training of students to become scientists. He has held seminars on scientific writing within the university and outside his classes so that more students could benefit from his knowledge and experience in scientific writing.

    Apart from his teaching, scientific paper editing, and limited research activity, Dr. Chang also holds cultural discussion and exchange activities with local and foreign students and teachers from Wenzhou University, as well as Wenzhou Medical University and Wenzhou Kean University in his English Bridge program, which is part of the Luoshan Foreign Language Bridge program organized by Yuying Library at Wenzhou University. Dr. Chang believes that raising cultural awareness among students and teachers can provide a positive benefit to life under cross-cultural influences.
